I met gerald Nsibande in 2000, and he was recording R&B tunes that he had written. I asked him to sing a song in Swazi for me for the African compilation album, and he said he would enjoy that, but he did not know any traditional songs, however, around that time, an African song called “Kothbiro” became popular from the soundtrack of the film “Blood Diamond” and Jeff Britton played it for me. He gave me some lyrics he had written, based on the beatitudes and asked that I write music for it that was in the vein of “Kothbiro” and have Gerald translate the lyrics for us, and hence “Blessed Are” came to be. Gerald recorded his own songs with me for several more years and then moved up north… (That’s how we say it in Indiana, anyway.)
He and I continue to be facebook friends.
