Special Guest Kenny Aronoff

The first time I met Kenny Aronoff was right around 1990 in a music store in Fort Wayne called the “Percussion Center” (which no longer exists) I had stopped in to pick something up, and there he was, standing there, talking to Neil, the owner. I remember thinking, “That’s the guy who plays drums for John Cougar…” Our conversation was brief, but I never forgot it.

Fast forward a quarter of a century, and I am working for Sweetwater Sound, and Kenny came to give a lecture. Since playing for Mellencamp, he has gone on to play for Bon Jovi, the Smashing Pumpkins, and played drums on countless hit songs… (He told me that he once turned on the radio and heard five songs in a row that he had played on!) It was an inspiring lecture, and afterward, I went up to him, and said “I want to hire you.”

That was it. I sent Kenny the rough mix to his “Uncommon Studios” California, and gave him an overview of how I wanted the song to develop. He knocked it out of the park.
